MASTERING THE METHODS: WHAT I LEARNED FROM THE EARLY CAREER SCIENTIFIC WRITING WORKSHOP

As a doctorate student in the field of prevention research, I am continuously looking for ways to improve my scientific skills and ability to effectively explain them. Writing a high-quality research paper entails not just presenting intriguing findings, but also ensuring that each portion of the manuscript particularly the Methods is clear, thorough and meets rigorous standards.
EUSPR’s ESF recently offered the opportunity to attend the Early Career Scientific Writing Workshop at the 16th EUSPR conference in Berlin, Germany from 24 to 26 September 2025. This workshop was the part of a series of workshops offered at EUSPR conferences, which focused primarily on writing the methods portion of scientific articles. This session was geared for early-career academics like me. I found it to be one of the most useful and enlightening learning experiences that I had thus far in my PhD path. The session was designed to provide both theoretical learning and hands-on practice. It was specifically well-matched to people working in prevention research with qualitative methodologies or Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs). The workshop was co-facilitated by Dr. Zila Sanchez and Dr. Giovanni Aresi, Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editor, respectively, of the Journal of Prevention, the Official Journal of the European Society for Prevention Research. Since my work focuses on an RCT, I joined the group dedicated to RCT methods and went through the tools that I am using in my research work.
Why This Workshop Mattered in My Doctoral Journey
Scientific writing can be intimidating, especially at the start of one’s research career. To somehow, every early career researcher has to deal with the issues of knowing what to include, how much detail to provide, and how to meet the expectations of journal editors and peer reviewers. The Methods section is, indeed much significant in assessing a study’s transparency and repeatability, particularly in randomized control trials including complicated interventions, randomization, and control conditions. While designing and conducting an RCT for my doctoral dissertation, I needed to ensure my methods were not just scientifically sound, but also clearly and completely reported. Poorly written methods can lead to manuscript rejection, ethical concerns about replicability, or misinterpretation of findings. This workshop offered targeted support to bridge that gap between conducting rigorous research and communicating it effectively.
From Chaos to Clarity – Structure of the Workshop
Since data is so vast, diverse and complex, data analysis can easily become chaotic. Analysts may struggle with inconsistent formats, missing values, and irrelevant information if they don’t have a clear plan. There are many different tools and techniques, and picking the incorrect one can produce false insights. Furthermore, time and effort can be lost due to imprecise goals or poorly formulated inquiries. Collaboration adds another level of complication because miscommunication between teams can stymie development. Without organization and structure, it is simple to get lost in the shuffle, which makes it challenging to glean valuable insights and transform unstructured data into knowledge that can be put to use.
The Early Career Scientific Writing workshop was meticulously intended to teach both core information and practical skills to early career researchers, particularly those working in preventive research. All participants, attended the thorough plenary session that kicked off the workshop. Using the IMRaD (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion) format as a framework, this session covered the fundamental elements of a scientific paper, laying the groundwork. It underlined how each segment contributes to a cohesive scientific narrative and how clarity and logical flow are essential for effective communication. The Methods section, was the subject of a substantial amount of the plenary, which emphasized its significance for guaranteeing transparency, reproducibility, and scientific integrity. Additionally, the workshop covered how to write strong abstracts and titles, recognize and steer clear of typical mistakes in scientific writing, and comprehend what journal editors and peer reviewers anticipate. In addition to being educational, this comprehensive summary helped participants better understand how to approach their writing with a more methodical and strategic mentality.
The workshop transformed to a more interactive, discipline-specific format with breakout sessions after the plenary. Based on their areas of interest, participants were split into two small groups: one group studied qualitative research methodologies (led by Dr. Giovanni Aresi) and the other quantitative group, which I chose, led by (Dr. Zila Sanchez) focused on randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Peer interaction and in-depth learning were made possible by this more intimate, smaller setting. We worked directly with actual passages from published publications during the RCT focused session, applying the CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials) standards to critically analyze them. This exercise was very beneficial because it helped us differentiate between imprecise, insufficient reporting and writing that is accurate, transparent, and reproducible by converting abstract standards into tangible instances. We discovered common reporting gaps and excellent practices through group discussion, and we also learned how to improve our own writing.
What I learned and unlearned in RCT Session
The workshop’s breakout session on RCTs provided me multiple key insights that will directly influence in designing, documenting and writing the methods section of my research papers.
- The ability to use the CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials) guidelines as a structural tool to direct the planning, execution, and documentation of my RCT from the outset, rather than merely as a checklist at the end of the writing process, was one of the most crucial lessons I learned. Dr. Zila stated the importance of CONSORT, stating that it is a guide for transparent, consistent, and replicable research communication rather than just a list of formal requirements. By explicitly outlining the participant’s randomization process, providing sufficient detail about the intervention and control groups for replication, and outlining results and statistical analyses beforehand, this rephrasing improved my understanding of the breadth and intent of each reporting item.
- The analysis and comparison of two published RCT papers one from the 1980s and one from a more recent publication was one particularly an insightful activity. It was intriguing to learn how standards for scientific reporting have changed over time through this side-by-side comparison. Many of the details that we now consider crucial, like information on participant flow, statistical planning, and allocation concealment, were absent from the earlier article. The more recent study, on the other hand, adhered to contemporary reporting guidelines, using a defined framework and precise descriptions that matched the CONSORT checklist. This exercise demonstrated the considerable advancements in research transparency, methodological rigor, and publication standards as well as the need of following current best practices in the modern world.
- Another key takeaway was the significance of clarity and precision in language when describing methodological procedures. Vague statements like “participants were randomly assigned” or “standard care was provided” leaves room for interpretation, which can undermine the credibility of the study.
- Writing not only for peer reviewers but also for future researchers who might wish to duplicate or expand upon our work was a common theme throughout the session. Sections on RCT procedures that enable someone else to conduct the experiment in a different environment just by reading the article are the best. My perspective changed and made the to focus on how can I make my research intelligible, repeatable, and practical?
The discussion also reaffirmed the idea that the methods section should not only meet the requirements of journal reviewers but also function as a trustworthy resource for researchers in the future who might wish to build on or duplicate the work. Focus switches to accuracy, thoroughness, and accessibility when writing for this larger scientific community as opposed to a smaller audience. All things considered, the RCT methods session helped me much better comprehend how to organize and compose a rigorous methods section that satisfies global standards and considers the changing demands of the scientific community.
Theory to Practice: Applying the insights to my Study
The insights I gained from the RCT-focused session of the workshop have already started to shape how I approach the development and documentation of my own doctoral research. This training came at the perfect time because I am currently focusing on creating and preparing the methods part for my RCT study. Using the CONSORT checklist as a foundation for planning as well as writing was one of the first adjustments I made. I began going over each item on the checklist to make sure that my study design included all of the necessary components, such as a clearly defined randomization process, thorough intervention protocols, and explicit outcome measurements. In order for the study to be deemed rigorous and reproducible, I am also going into further detail about my allocation procedures, blinding techniques, and sample size rationale. Additionally, the session inspired me to write with readers in mind not only journal reviewers, but also academics who might want to expand or duplicate my discoveries. I have consequently started being more deliberate about defining terms, staying away from ambiguous language, and making sure that my approach is intelligible even to others who are not familiar with my particular context. In addition to highlighting the importance of adhering to current publication standards, the comparison of earlier and more recent RCT papers helped me spot outmoded reporting practices that I should steer clear of. Subsequently, the workshop provided me with the tools I needed to become more confident in my scientific writing and conscious of the standards I must meet. The methods section is no longer just a technical obligation for me; it is also a key opportunity to establish my work’s integrity, transparency, and scientific worth. My writing method now incorporates these lessons, and they will continue to shape the way I present research for the rest of my career.
I want to express my gratitude to the EUSPR early career forum once more for giving early careers such a fantastic platform and, in fact, an incredible chance to learn about scientific writing. My approach to writing scientific publications changed significantly after I attended the Early Career Scientific Writing Workshop. The workshop highlighted the importance of clear and rigorous reporting as the cornerstone of good science by concentrating on the Methods section, which is frequently the most technical and underappreciated part of the paper.
For doctorate students working on an RCT or preparing for publication, I strongly encourage attending workshops like this one. The practical, hands-on approach, along with defined reporting criteria and assistance from real-world situations, truly makes a difference.
Writing for science is a skill, and like other skills, it becomes better with practice, instruction, and criticism. I appreciate the chance to acquire this ability at such a young age, and I am excited to use what I have learned in both current and potential career.
